Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid

There are many people looking to get some kitchen remodeling done in the coming year. While most of them will successfully create the kitchen remodel of their dreams, others may fall short. There are many costly mistakes people make while kitchen remodeling that can cost a lot of time and money. It is important to know the problems people face while doing a kitchen remodel to ensure your next project goes exactly as planned.

The Main Kitchen Remodel Mistakes

A lot of work goes into a kitchen remodel, which means a lot of problems can occur throughout the process. Some of the most common remodel mistakes seem obvious at first, but being aware of them is going to really help you on your kitchen remodeling journey.

It’s Pretty, but is it Functional?

Surprisingly enough one of the most common kitchen remodel mistakes is focusing too heavily on looks. You could have designed and built the most beautiful kitchen you have ever seen only to find out that you can’t open your dishwasher and cabinets at the same time, or the fridge is on the opposite side of the kitchen from where you prepare food. A lot of times homeowners forget to think of these small things only to end up disliking their kitchen design, not because it looks bad, but because it creates much more work than necessary. While having a great looking kitchen is always a plus, it is at the end of the day a workspace.

Forgetting Something?

When doing a kitchen remodel it is very important to make a list of things you will have to have done by the end of the remodel. More often than not, homeowners will forget a crucial aspect of design, and by the time they realize it is too late. How many outlets do you have, how much counter space, cabinet space, does the style match the connecting rooms, do you have proper lighting, etc. When remodeling your kitchen make sure you have all of these things figured out before you get too far in. Know what appliances you want, and how the kitchen is going to fit with the rest of the house. Make sure the kitchen makes your daily life easier, and know that the things that you personally find important may not be the same things your designer finds important. Make your preferences known, so that you can ensure your kitchen remodel, makes things easier, and feels good, not just one or the other.

One Color Overload

Having all stainless steel appliances sounds great, and you had them picked out the whole time, and they work so well. True, but when you walk into a kitchen and half the room is chrome, it isn’t that appealing to the eye. Make sure when picking colors and styles, you think about everything in your kitchen, not just the walls and cabinets. Have some diversity of colors and styles, to find a good mix. Know how your appliances are going to fit and look like in your kitchen.

Making the Most of Your Small Kitchen

Making the Most of Your Small Kitchen

A smaller-sized kitchen holds just as much potential as a larger-sized kitchen. All it takes is some careful planning to create a beautiful and functional small kitchen. Here are some tips for turning your small kitchen into the ‘Wright’ kitchen for you!

Drawers Over Doors

Switch up your cabinets to drawers to maximize how much usable space you will have. Drawers give off an organized, chic vibe, even if the contents of the drawers aren’t organized.

Breakfast Bar

Obviously, space is crucial in a small kitchen, so why take up tons of space with a bulky kitchen table that won’t fit well, and install a breakfast bar instead. By giving up a couple of cabinets, you can install a small breakfast bar that keeps your space from getting cluttered and cramped by a table.

Positioning

It is super important to carefully consider where you place your appliance, drawers, cabinets, and sink. You need to ensure that each of these items will be able to fully function once everything is installed. After all, you don’t want to open a drawer only to be blocked from fully opening it by the oven handle.

Hardware Choice

While your choice of hardware doesn’t seem to be important or impactful, it can have a surprising effect on the visual appeal of the kitchen. Using simple, streamlined hardware helps the kitchen to appear larger than bigger, bulkier handles. Additionally, in a small, tight space it is easier to accidentally catch your clothes on hardware, so choosing small, streamlined hardware cuts down on the likelihood of this happening.

Appliance Size

Bigger does not mean better in the world of small kitchens. It’s tempting to choose larger appliances, but you need to be realistic about what your space can handle. Appliance manufacturers make appliances that are specifically designed for small spaces, so consider choosing those for your kitchen.

What to Look for in an Interior Designer?

What to Look for in an Interior Designer?

Home remodeling projects are stressful, especially when trying to find an interior designer. It is hard to know what questions to ask and what to look for. Luckily, things get much easier once you know what you are looking for.

Home Remodeling with an Interior Designer Who Knows You

When looking for an interior designer for your next home remodeling project, make sure you choose a designer that you can work with. Interior design is about bringing a room to life. But, it can be hard to get your vision across to someone you dislike or someone who doesn’t understand what you want. Many designers are different and bring their own unique style to a home remodeling project. It is recommended that you meet with more than one designer to make sure they work with you as well in person as they do on paper. Ideally meeting with at least three designers will ensure you get one that really suits you. Make sure to ask as many questions as you can.

While finding an interior designer you like and believe you can work with, start asking some questions to eliminate some of your options. Ask them about the project timeline, design style, budget/expenses, payment options, and more. Asking plenty of questions is a great way to narrow down your search to find the best choice for you.

Being Honest with Your Interior Designer

It is important to be forward and honest with your designer. They need to know what you have to work with. Additionally, they need to know what you are looking for in a finished project to get you the best results. The best way to do this is to show your designer sources of inspiration and your personal style. These can be images, a Pinterest board, magazine cutouts, or a floorplan, among other things. Anything that you show the designer will help them to learn what you are looking for.

Once they have an idea of what you want, it is important to discuss the budget. Home remodeling can be expensive, so it is important to be upfront here. A lot of time is wasted in interior design coming up with elaborate plans that fall through due to them not fitting within the client’s budget.

Backsplash with Style

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen up your kitchen is a simple backsplash. Even though it is simple to put up, a new backsplash gives the kitchen a new dynamic. With your backsplash, the sky’s the limit. Starting with color, textures, and materials you can create a beautiful look. The backsplash helps make the most abused area of the kitchen easy to clean from spilled food and hot grease splatters.  Don’t have time to install a new backsplash? Add a coat of fresh paint to your kitchen walls! Even a new coat of paint can help bring some life to a kitchen. A Wright kitchen remodel using our team at Wright Building Center can help you find the right option for you!

Cabinet Concepts

The main focal point of the kitchen. Whether you want to completely re-do your cabinets completely or update them with a little color and/or accessories, Wright Building Center has all you need. This may also be your chance to try open shelving. Using an open shelving system can help where you lack in kitchen space. By using an open concept, you display your kitchen while creating needed space.

Creative new lighting

When creating your dream kitchen it is important to factor in the lighting. For example, if you are installing dark cabinets with a light backsplash it will help to add that bright color by installing lights under the cabinet. It brings the eyes to the color contrast in a pleasing look. If you installed an island in your kitchen, use hanging lights to help show it off and brighten the space.

Fun Projects to Make with Wood Scraps

Chances are, you probably have a pile of wood scraps laying around somewhere, taking up precious space. So, instead of letting the wood go to waste, Wright Building Center has some ideas to transform the scraps of specialty lumber into one of these fun projects!

Wall Mounted Wine Rack

This simple project is a simple build that can easily be customized to fit your space! First, you’ll need to gather your materials. For this DIY, you will need scrap 2×6 board, wood glue, screws, nails, and paint or stain (optional). To assemble the wine rack, determine the size that will work best. Then, assemble a square shaped frame for the rack using the wood glue, nails, and screws. Once you have finished building the frame, it is time to customize the color using paint and stain. Now, you have a beautiful wine rack that is both stylish and functional.

Cutting Board

This DIY looks super complicated and impressive, but is actually fairly simple to make. All you need are scraps of wood and wood glue. To build the cutting board, simply glue these strips of wood together until you reach the size and shape cutting board that you want. Pro Tip- alternate with strips of different types of wood to create more interesting variation. Once you have the cutting board assembled, sand it and finish it with a food safe finish so that it’s ready for use!

Wooden Coasters

These coasters are much like the DIY cutting board. Using wood scraps and wood glue, create an interesting pattern from the scraps and glue them together. Once dry, sand the coasters and apply a finish to help keep moisture out of the wood. Now you have a set of new coasters for your home or to give as a gift!

So, if you have a pile of leftover specialty lumber from Wright Building Center laying around or scraps from a previous project, consider repurposing them for a new DIY. Don’t have all the tools you need? No need to worry! Rent them from the wide selection of rental tools that Wright has to offer. Or, swing by today to pick up supplies for your next project!
